The origin of language; what are words?
In the modern world that we are living today, language is a very key component because
it is widely used and passed from one generation to another. Perhaps, the key question that we all
need to ask ourselves is, “where did language originate from?” There are two beliefs or
hypothesis that explains well where language originated from. Given the present knowledge,
neither of them can be disapproved or approved. The first belief is that of divine creation
whereby many communities believe that language is a gift from God to human beings. This is
seen in the book of Genesis where God created Adam and Eve who were given the responsibility
to name the animals. This shows that human beings were created with the capacity and ability to
use language. Language can never be proved to be as old as human beings but the fact is that,
human beings and language are inseparable. The second belief is that of the hypothesis of human
evolution whereby it reached a point in the evolutionary moment whereby human beings
acquired a brain which was more sophisticated which invented language and made the process of
learning possible.
On the other hand, words are components of speech or writing whereby they are
combined to come up with sentences. It is through the combination of words that people are able
to communicate. Therefore words are termed to be constituents of language because they go
