A piece of metal with a mass of 1.2 kg, specific heat of 176 J/kg/ ◦C, and initial temperature of 98◦C is dropped into an insulated jar that contains liquid with a mass of 3 kg, specific heat of 1000 J/kg/ ◦C, and initial temperature of 1◦C. The piece of metal is removed after 6.2 s, at which time its temperature is 20◦C. Find the temperature of the liquid after the metal is removed. Neglect any effects of heat transfer to the air or to the insulated jar. Answer in units of ◦C

The amount of heat energy lost by the metal is
E = 176 J/kg*C x 1.2kg x (98–20) = 16473.6 J

That is transferred to the liquid, raising it's temperature

  16473.6J = 1,000 kg/J*C x 3kg x ∆T
∆T = 5.49

Since the liquid started at 1ºC, the final temp is 5.49+1=6.49ºC
