True or False?

When using the formulas for validity in hypothetical syllogisms, it is critical that you put the syllogism into standard form, at least in your mind, before you look for the corresponding formula (modus ponens, modus tollens, affirming the consequent, denying the antecedent).

In an enthymeme, how can you tell right off the bat whether you have already been supplied with the conclusion?

In an enthymeme where you have already been supplied the conclusion, how can you find the MINOR term?

In an enthymeme where you have already been supplied the conclusion, how can you find the MAJOR term

Comment helpfully on a classmate's post. By "helpfully," I mean try to offer some advice if you think an error has been made or if you think that anything can be made more clear. If you can't find either of those two situations, explain to a classmate how your post differs from theirs:

1. True or False? When using the formulas for validity in hypothetical syllogisms, it is critical that you put the syllogism into standard form, at least in your mind, before you look for the corresponding formula (modus ponens, modus tollens, affirming the consequent, denying the antecedent).

True of course, I have to put them in standard form in my mind and on paper.

2. In an enthymeme, how can you tell right off the bat whether you have already been supplied with the conclusion?

I look for the conclusion indicator.

3. In an enthymeme where you have already been supplied with the conclusion, how can you find the MINOR term?

I can look at the premise I was given and figure out whether it is the minor or major PREMISE. I can look at the main subject they were talking about is the main focus of the argument.

4. In an enthymeme where you have already been supplied with the conclusion, how can you find the MAJOR term?

The major term is the term that describes the subject of the argument, so the major term is the term that talks about the subject in general as a group that has similar characteristics.

Question 1
True. It can be challenging to determine which formula to use without putting the syllogism
into standard form. Also, using the wrong formula can lead to invalid conclusions. For example,
if a syllogism is not put into standard form, it may be difficult to see that the conclusion is the
inverse of the premise (Zelazko, 20...
