Introduction
In contemporary society, the term consumerism may appear to be a catchy buzzword that is both
difficult to understand. Yet understanding this concept, how it comes about, and its potential
impact on modern society is vital in helping the global populaces understand the impacts of what
they buy and consume. Essentially, consumerism describes the concept of purchasing and owning
a variety of material goods as the foundation for being happy. While the ideology of finding
happiness through material ownership is deeply rooted in philosophy, consumerism becomes
relevant to the way businesses are conducted and how economics eventually affect the
environment. From an economist’s perspective, consumerism is significant as it results in people
spending money on goods and services, thus stimulating marketplaces and creating economic
growth. However, the recent research literature has revealed that mass consumption directly
exhausts natural resources, creating tremendous waste disposal amounts and that each production
stage increases environmental problems. The paper analyzes the documentary film “Death by
Design (2016)” and “Anthropocene: The Human Epoch (2018)” regarding the significance in
enhance the understanding of consumerism and its impacts on the environment.
