Introduction
Technology has provided different sectors of the economy with alternatives for
efficiently executing their activities. Industrial, agricultural, service and the manufacturing
sectors have all embraced holistic use of technology. This is evident from the number of
operations that have been up-scaled through technology adoption. Adoption of technology in
these sectors is not only limited to product development but also covers reporting and
consumer satisfaction. Of the recent past the healthcare system has also embraced technology
in execution of its activities. Technology used in healthcare improves efficiency and timing
of operations, reduction of operational costs and increasing positive patient outcomes
(Shekelle et al., 2006).
Despite the aforementioned advantages that are associated with inclusion of
technology in the healthcare system, it is worth noting that technology adoption has both its
merits and demerits in any sector. This paper seeks to detail on the effect of usage of social
media and smartphones on healthcare. Social media is a broad component of technology
access and for this paper it will be used to refer to applications such as Facebook, Myspace,
Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter (Lester et al., 2006).
Globally, smartphones have changed operations in the healthcare system.
Communication, sending updates, accessing patient results, scheduling and confirming
appointments are just some of the few healthcare services that can be accessed using a
smartphone. It is also worth mentioning the injustices that technology (smartphones and
social media apps) have contributed to the healthcare sector. These injustices include; court
battles due to information breach, brutality from cyber-attacks, employee breach of patients
privacy and vice versa and technological fraud in payments. Hence, given this multifaceted
scenario that may result due to adoption of technology in the healthcare sector, a variety of

issues need to be considered in application of technology in this system. Issues such as;
breach of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), privacy concerns
and legal and ethical considerations (Anderson, 2007).
From the scenario provided to be used in this paper a number of ethical data
management procedures are breached by the nurse on duty. For instance; HIPAA is breached
by the nurse. HIPAA refers to a healthcare sector provision for security and safeguarding
patients’ medical information. Precisely provision number two of this act is violated. This
provision is titled administrative simplification whereby national standards for carrying out
electronic transactions are profiled in this section. It is the role of the healthcare facility to
ensure that its employees conform to this provision for any patient who visits the hospital.
From the scenario it is evident that the nurse breaches this act by using the information on a
patient’s record to confirm to his friend that actually the patient is a celebrity.
According to the scenario description there is also breach of patient private concerns.
This is in the view that maybe the patient wouldn’t want the information that was share...
