If a boat goes downstream 72 miles in 3 hours and upstream 60 miles in 6 hours, the rate of the river and the rate of the boat in still water respectively are ________?

Let the speed of boat be x mph and speed of river be y mph.

Speed downstream=(x+y)mph

Time taken to go 72 miles=72/(x+y)=3

  So, x+y=24  ……………(1)

Speed upstream=(x-y)mph

Time taken to go 60 miles=60/(x-y)=6

  So, x-y=10 ………………(2)

Adding eq (1) and (2)

2x=34

x=17 mph

So y=7 mph
