suppose you have $28 in your account and start saving $18.25 every week.  Your friend has $161 in his account and is withdrawing $15 every week.  When will your account balances be the same?

Your account would start with 28 and add 18.25 each week.  If we let "w" be the number of weeks, the equation for your account would be 28 + 18.25w

Your friend's account has 161 to start and deducts 15 each week (again, "w").  So the equation for your friend's account would be 161 - 15w.

If we want to know when the accounts would be the same, we set them equal:  28 + 18.25w = 161 - 15w

28 + 18.25w = 161 - 15w

Add 15w to both sides:   28 + 33.25w = 161

Subtract 28 from both sides:    33.25w = 133

Divide by 33.25 on both sides:  w = 4

Hope that helps.
