Description
New technology—and the application of existing technology—only appears in healthcare settings after careful and significant research. The stakes are high, and new clinical systems need to offer evidence of positive impact on outcomes or efficiencies.
Nurse informaticists and healthcare leaders formulate clinical system strategies. As these strategies are often based on technology trends, informaticists and others have then benefited from consulting existing research to inform their thinking.
In this Assignment, you will review existing research focused on the application of clinical systems. After reviewing, you will summarize your findings.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on the impact of clinical systems on outcomes and efficiencies within the context of nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
Conduct a search for recent (within the last 5 years) research focused on the application of clinical systems. The research should provide evidence to support the use of one type of clinical system to improve outcomes and/or efficiencies, such as “the use of personal health records or portals to support patients newly diagnosed with diabetes.”

The use of Patient Portals to Improve the Health Outcomes of Diabetes Mellitus Patients
Chronic illnesses cause the need for common communication between patients and
healthcare providers. Therefore, providers must have innovative ways of connecting with their
patients to provide the information they need to improve their healthcare outcomes and make
informed healthcare decisions. Patient portals are one innovative way to ensure communication
and coordination of care with patients. The technology lets people view their information to
know the results of laboratory tests, physicians' comments, and any new developments that may
affect their outcomes. Based on the literature, patient portals help diabetes patients manage their
disease by allowing them to access information like ordered laboratory results and their
interpretations, payment issues, and other useful data that may help them understand their
treatments and improve their health outcomes.

Graetz et al. studied how the use of patient portals impacted medication adherence among
diabetes patients. The study was based on the fact that electronic health records are used
in various healthcare settings to enable easy storage and information access. The
technologies also have extensions that allow them to perform other uses, such as allowing
patients to access their information via the patient portals. The authors sought to know
