Description

Discussion Question 1: Discuss reasons why health disparities exist between racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. Be specific in your answer and be sure to draw from what you learned about internal vulnerabilities to disease, the political-economic environment and vulnerability, as well as the history of the political-economic environment in the U.S. as it relates to African Americans and other minority groups (from the "Caste" reading).

Discussion Question 2: For your discussion post this week, you will need to design and describe a health promotion program, aimed at improving a health problem for a specific population. For examples of what this might look like, see case studies 11-1 through 11-4. Your discussion post doesn't need to be as long or as detailed as the case studies from the textbook. Just be sure to describe each of the following three elements:

(1) Identify a specific health problem, in a specific population.

This could be something that you have noticed from your own cultural experience (for example, you could use your post from discussion 1 or examples from other student discussion 1 posts), or from examples in class or in the book throughout the semester, as long as you do not use the same examples given in chapter 11.

(2) Discuss a cultural factor relevant to the health problem.

This could be an ethnomedical/ethnopsychiatric practice that plays a role, issues of morality or stigma connected to the health problem, internal cultural factors or external cultural or political-economic factors, etc. See the questions on page 140 for more details).

(3) Propose an idea for a health promotion program or intervention that addresses the cultural component of the health problem. Be sure to describe in detail how the program would be effective in taking the cultural factor into account, and through it, have the potential to improve health for the population.

This could be a health promotion program, an intervention, a community outreach program, information dissemination or a similar initiative. Think about designing the program in a way that will be meaningful and effective in your target population. Be specific and be creative!

Discussion Question 1:
Over the decades, there has been a series of debates concerning the issue of health
disparities in the United States between racial and ethnic groups. The main issue is based on the
argument that health and healthcare among underserved groups and people of color have been a
longstanding challenge. Beyond, health disparities are influenced by existing economic, social,
and political vulnerability or inequalities based on racism and ethnicity (Artiga, Orgera & Pham,
2020). When addressing the cause of disparity among the people in the United States, it is
essential to concentrate on social justice and improve the country's general health and economic
growth. This is because people of color and those from underserved groups undergo higher rates
of death and illness globally due to health conditions and other limiting factors to the general
nation's health system. Some of the main causes of health disparity between the racial and ethnic
groups in the United States are geographical differences, lack of access to enough health
coverage, difficulties in communication between health care providers and patients, provider
stereotype, cultural barriers, and lack of access to doctors (Zavala et al., 2021).
Health disparity has been influenced by the lack of access to adequate health coverage
among people of color and underserved groups (Davis et al., 2021). Despite the implementation
of Affordable Care by Obama, there have been several changes and reforms in the Act risking
low-income people and...
