Communities of Practice
Communities of practice involve grouping people who share common interests, concerns
or sets of problems and who work together to solve the problems and achieve a common goal. It
involves gaining collective inquiry and reflection among the group, which focuses on building
collective knowledge and shared identity. According to Pyrko, Dörfler, & Eden, (2019), the main
concept is the domain, which is the shared interests and commitments that distinguish the group
from others and create a common ground where members can actively participate, be guided in
their learning process, and give their actions meaning. Through collective learning and joint
activities, the concept of community is born, which fosters interactions and sharing of ideas. The
last concept is the practice that the community develops from, in which members gain
knowledge through their shared interests and also create a repertoire of resources that they
incorporate into their practices.
It’s important to have communities of practice in organizations as it connects people and
employees from different ethnic backgrounds and skills where they can share ideas and
information, which helps in solving organizational problems and driving employees towards a
common goal. Gijbels, Endedijk, & Hirschler, (2021) argue how communities of practice
stimulate learning as new and existing knowledge is shared among members, which helps
improve their practices as collaborative processes are improved, enabling flows of ideas and
collective decision-making that helps members solve the problems they face.
Organizations can cultivate communities of practice within their business entity by
designing the practices through pre-existing personal networks. Setting up goals that align with
the community’s goals and perspectives enables it to open dialogues involving inside
perspectives where a team understands the domains and issues at heart, and It enables sharing of

knowledge of members’ output requirements, which enables the team to come up with criteria
for achieving the outputs (de Carvalho-Filho, M. A., Tio, R. A., & Steinert, 2020). Inviting
different levels of participation also expands the group’s diversity and increases the dynamic of
ideas, enabling a wider pool of knowledge and practices to be adopted. The organization can also
focus on value creation as it enables the community’s continuity, expands its relationship status,
and participates in collective events and activities that increase the value of the community. They
can finally create a rhythm in the community through strong relationship bonds and aligned goals
that bring the community together.
