Introduction
In today’s world, inequality is the order of the day. These aspects are caused by
economic, political, and social limitations that tend to result in inequality and unfairness. One of
the current social issues that America and other countries are facing is racial discrimination,
commonly known as racism. Racial discrimination is a form of discrimination and prejudice
based on race and color. Racism refers to antagonism and/or prejudice directed against
somebody of a dissimilar race grounded on the notion that one’s race is inferior. The media has
played an essential role in depicting this form of social inequality to the audience hence change
people’s mindset regarding their approach and perspectives on the issue of racism. This paper
will analyze the theme of racism in the television program Hairspray.
Plot of the television program
Hairspray is musical comedy movie that was produced in 2007 and is based on the 1988
comedy movie of the same name. The British-American project adapted Waters’ 1988 script and
was produced by Ingenious Media. The setting of the movie is in 1962 and follows the story of
Tracy Turnblad who is a high school student living in Maryland. Tracy auditions for a position
on the ‘The Corny Collins Show’ and fortunately she wins. She then becomes a celebrity, a
pacesetter in fashion and dance. Her new status in the show ousts the show’s reigning dance
queen and brings racial equality to the ‘The Corny Collins Show’. Hairspray was aired in NBC
on December 2007 (Mielke, 2015).

Hairspray is steadfastly ingrained in 1960s America, but it provides refined and basic
ways of understanding and acknowledging the aspect of racism today. Furthermore, the ending
