Description

Write a 6–8-page assessment of an ethical issue in a case study and construct an ethical analysis based on the application of ethical principles.

Assessment Instructions

Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.

In this assessment, you will choose a case study and analyze an ethical dilemma within it, based on the application of ethical principles. Think of this ethical analysis as a report you would make in a professional context. In Assessment 2, you will report on cultural aspects of the same case. In Assessment 3, you will apply related psychological theories, research, principles and standards to develop an action plan to resolve the case. In Assessment 4, you will record a presentation to communicate your research and plan.

Preparation

To prepare for this assessment, complete the following:

  • Read the four case studies in the Case Studies media.
  • Choose one that you will work with in Assessments 1–4.

Instructions

Write a 6–8-page report in which you complete the following:

  • Create a title page: Write a title that reflects the purpose of your work. It is suggested that you use the APA Paper Template, linked in the Resources under the Suggested Resources heading, to format your paper according to the APA manual (sixth edition).
  • Write an introduction: For the introduction section of your paper, include the title at the top of the first page. (In APA format, the word Introduction is not used as a heading.) Briefly summarize:
    • The ethical issue in the case you have chosen.
    • How professional standards and other resources, in general terms, point toward solutions.
    • How the issue in general relates to larger societal problems.
  • Create a heading titled Applied Ethical Principles and Standards: Use the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct to assess which of them relate to the particular ethical issue in this case, and analyze how they do so.
  • Create a heading titled Alternative Solutions:
    • Brainstorm several alternatives for resolving the ethical dilemma in the case. Thoroughly analyze the possible ramifications for at least three alternatives. Then, choose a course of action.
    • Explain your chosen course of action and support it based on both ethical principles and current psychological research (within the past decade).
  • Create a heading titled Conclusion: Briefly summarize the importance of the problem and make a compelling appeal for implementation of your action plan.

Keep in mind that, while your writing must conform to APA standards, you must explain all information in a manner that can be easily understood by a nonacademic or nonscientific audience.

Refer to the Ethical Issue and Action Plan Scoring Guide to ensure that you meet the grading criteria for this assessment.

Additional Requirements

Your assessment should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Written communication is well organized and free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA style: Comply with current APA style and formatting.
  • Number of resources: A minimum of three academic resources.
  • Length: 6–8 typed, double-spaced pages, excluding cover page and references.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Case 1: EDUCATION The case of Janna and Alex Janna, a school counselor, is working with seven-year-old Alex, a first grader at Constance Elementary in a rural town in Ohio. Alex was adopted from a Romanian orphanage at age three. In the orphanage, there was very few staff and many children. Alex, along with the other children in the orphanage, did not have much interaction with one another or with the staff. Alex spent extended periods in his crib where he could see other children in the room, but was unable to interact. His well-meaning caretakers had time just enough time to feed and clean him, but did not spend time talking or playing with him or the other children. As a first grader in a class of 25 students, Alex is required to interact daily with other children. Alex often plays alone and doesn't acknowledge the other children. His teacher comments that Alex appears "to be in his own little world". When other children approach him, he appears not to notice them. He then becomes aggressive toward the other children when they get in his "personal space". The principal does not understand why Alex acts the way he does and gets noticeably angry with him. The principal has talked with his adoptive parents, and is threatening to expel him if he acts out again. Janna has been assigned to work with Alex to prevent further aggression. Consider the individual, family, societal, cultural, and ethical issues Janna must think about as she interacts with Alex, his teacher, his adoptive parents, and the school principal. Ethical Issue Analysis

The ethical dilemma in this case is if Janna as the school counsellor will be able to
help Alex who is a seven years old adopted child exhibiting aggressive behaviour towards other
children in school and anti-social character due to his socialization when he was a child, if she
is unable to help him the principle has warned his adoptive parents that he will be expelled
from the learning institution. Alex is a child who spent his formative years lonely in a child
orphanage. He never had the opportunity to learn how to interact with other people or children
since he spent most of the time alone (Brodzinsky, 2005). He is now in a new environment
where he is expected to be like the other kids who have grown up a social environment and
who have learned social skills since they were toddlers.
Janna has the responsibility of establishing a solution that is workable to the
principal of the school who is threatening to expel Alex from school if he continues with the
aggressiveness, and this solution should be ethical considering he is an adopted child. She also
has the responsibility of talking to Alex's parents and teacher to determine the best way they
can help to solve the situation
Studies have shown that children who are socially withdrawn do not engage in
social activities with other peers as is the case with Alex. They lack the basic social skills to
establish relationships, they may not be aware of what to say to the peers or how to behave
around them. To prevent this risk they retreat further and spend time alone because it is less
painful than trying to create a connection with other people (Rubin & Coplan, 2009). One of
the possible solutions in such a case is by helping the child befriend other peers.
When this kind of behavior is not arrested early enough when someone is still in their formative
years, it can reflect in the adolescent and adult life. These are the people who spend most of
the significant part of their time in isolation either working or doing the things they love such
as writing or reading books without caring to make a connection with other people. Such

behavior can cause someone to be rejected by the community and continue to live a life of
loneliness because their behaviors tend to be abnormal to people who are highly socialized
(Wolfe, 2007). Lack of social skills can also negatively reflect in their jobs, through lack of
teamwork with other employees and therefore negatively affecting their performance at work.
