A Report on the UA Jazz Performance
The University of Alabama places a keen emphasis on performance arts. That shows
through its support of music ensembles that perform in the amphitheatre on a regular basis. The
Huxford Symphony Orchestra performs six times every year on campus. Those people that make
it perform in the orchestra are those that major in music. But then students from other disciplines
are free to join too. Playing for the college ensemble is a valuable part of the college experience.
The school even gives credits for the practice sessions (twice a week) and performances. This
report recounts a performance by the University jazz ensemble. The event was on Thursday,
October 12.
The Performance
The concert lasted for a little over an hour. The playlist was nine songs long. It was an
exciting performance because the songs brought out all the aspects of the ensemble. The band
has many components to it. The first song was an exposition of all the significant elements of the
group. ‘Honeysuckle Bass’ is an old piece that explores the lower tones of the ensemble. It was a
fitting start to the evening since it starts off on a pianissimo, a low tempo. The song built up to a
crescendo with the lower tones coming out to the fore.
I noticed that the concert had a theme to it. All the melodies were stoic love ballads. They
had a calming effect on the audience. ‘Aerigin’ was the second song on the list. It is the work of
Sonny Rollins; it is more upbeat than the previous one. The reason that one gets the feeling is
that the tenor is more pronounced. An accentuated tenor makes the song appear to hit higher
notes. To the ears of an audience, it has the effect of making it look like the beat is faster than in
the previous piece. The rhythm section of the band dictated the pace by using different notes to

give the presentation originality. In ‘Aeregin’ the woodwind section played a particularly
pronounced role.
The performance was engaging in the sense that the ensemble understood the nature of an
audience. It is tiring to listen to and appreciate a performance that is continually rising in tempo.
A well-balanced concert has highs and lows. The songs too need to adapt to the general order of
highs and lows outside the climax. For instance, ‘Little Pumpkin’ leads to ‘In a Sentimental
Mood’ then move on to ‘What is This Thing Called Love?’. The three songs use the tenor
precedence to incorporate alto tones into the music to give it a fuller sound. One of the highlights
of any ensemble performance is the sound of different instruments combining to provide various
renditions of the same note.
‘Yes, My Friend’ was the hiatus in the performance. It did not involve all the elements of
the ensemble. The tenor saxophones are not actively involved in the performance, and that
provides the lull that allows the audience to take some time off from the hype in ‘What is this
Thing Called Love?’ ‘Goodbye Porkpie Hat’ prepares the audience for the soulful indulgence of
Charles Mingus.
The last three pieces in the concert were Charles Mingus works. It interacts with the
audience by driving the focus back to the individual. It must be noted that the general flow of the
entire play is somewhat cyclic. The first song ‘loosened up’ the audience. Honeysuckle Bass’
was not a very engaging song, at least emotionally. However, as the ensemble got deeper into its
playlist, the pieces drew in ...
