A stratified position in society is based of social status levels. If I person is wealthier than another, they naturally have a higher status because others value their role in society more. If you were to see a person with many material objects, such as a large house or multiple cars, they appear to be greater than others. Additonally, people who speak common languages such as English or Spanish may appear to be greater than people that speak Italian or French, because they fit in more with what one person may view as sucessful or "normal".
