An airplane travels 600 miles against the wind in 5 hours, and makes the return trip with the same wind in 1 hour.   Find the speed of the wind.

Airplane speed - wind speed = 600/5 = 120 mph.

Airplane speed + wind speed = 600/1 = 600 mph.

Solve the system: x + wind = 600
                              x - wind = 120

so 2x = 720 and x = 360

so the speed of the plane is 360 and that of the wind is 240.
