two planes take off at the same time from an airport. the first plane is flying at 246 mph on a course of 135 degrees. the second plane is flying in the direction of 175 degrees at 357 mph. Assuming there are no wind currents blowing, how far apart are they after 2 hours?

We can use the tangent rule to find the answer

angle between the two vectors = 175-135 = 40 degrees

A triangle can be plotted on a graph with both vectors and the angle 40 in between.

The distance will be ................

= Tan 40 x 492

=412.84 miles

in the back of the book they give use the answer 462miles

You can otherwise use the geometrical construction method where u use a graph paper to plot the vectors of the planes. then use ratios.

i.e the 1st plane went 246 x 2 = 492 miles

the 2nd plane went 357 x 2 = 714 miles.

use ratio of 1:100 and angle between is 40 degrees.

Once the construction is complete measure the line that completes the triangle.....it is approx 462 miles.
