two planes leave an airport at the same time. Their speeds are 130mph and 150mph, and the angle between their courses is 36 degrees. how far apart are they after 1.5 hour

Apr 28th, 2015

plane A moving at 130mph would have traveled a distance of 195miles after 1.5 hours. plane B travelling at 150 mph would have traveled  225 miles.

If Ax + By + Cz + D1 = 0 and Ax + By + Cz + D2 = 0 is a plane equation, then distance between planes can be found using the following formula

A=195 miles

B=225 miles

c^2= a^2+ b^2-2(ab)cos(36)

c^2= 195^2+225^2-2(195x225)cos(36)

c^2=88650-70991

c^2=17658

17.658 miles apart

but the answer in the back says 130 miles which I'm confused by

wait i give it a look!

Take the root here....c^2=17658

square root of 17658 is roughly 132.88

thanks thats what I've been getting is 132 for the past hour but the back of the book insists its 130

it can't be 130...unless rounding off to the nearest...using the cosine rule, the only eligible answer is 132
