the midpoint of line segment AB is M(4,2). If the coordinates of A are (6,-4), what are the coordinates of B?

Apr 28th, 2015

M = (4, 2)

A = (6, -4)

Mid point = ((x1 + x2)/2 , (y1 + y2)/2)

(4, 2) = ((6 + x2)/2 , (-4 + y2)/2)

So,

4 = (6 + x2)/2

4*2 = 6 + x2

8 = 6 + x2

x2 = 8 - 6

x2 = 2

and

2 = (-4 + y2)/2

2*2 = -4 + y2

4 = -4 + y2

y2 = 4 + 4

y2 = 8

So coordinate of B is (2, 8).

Note:- The numbers 1 and 2 in x1,x2,y1,y2  are subscripts.
