Evaluate the expression if y = -17 and z = 3.

-17 - (3)/-9(3) - (-17)

Obviously you would divide first because of order of operations to get

-17 - (-1/9) + 17

= 1/9

I am a very frustrated freshmen in highschool and every week I have online assignments that I have to complete within a certain time period. I worked that equation out several times and I also got 1/9 as my answer and it was wrong.

y-z/-9z-y if y=-17 and z=3

(-17) - (3) / -9(3)-(-17)

= -20/-10

=2

is how they explained it after they counted 1/9 wrong.. but as simple as that equation was that way, i have know idea how I; or you; went about it getting 1/9.

I don't know how 1/9 is wrong. The 17's cancel each other out since they are opposite signs as do the 3 in the fraction and you are left with -1/9. If your teacher is getting 2, I think he/she is incorrect. Teachers are only people and don't get it right 100% of the time.
