Playwrights, also referred to as a dramatist, played important roles in accelerating the
civilization and development of society in the past and still are essential in enhancing the
achievement of the same in modern contemporary society. Literature is like a mirror of the
society as it gives a reflection on what transpires in the society, what the people hold to be right
or wrong, and how the actions of others undermine such aspects. In societies which were ruled
by unjust and dictatorial leaders, it was the playwriters who through their literary works showed
the need for individuals to rise and champion their rights and freedoms. They were the voice of
the weak and the marginalized in the society. And when the world was sinking deep in the waters
of racial discrimination, slavery, and discrimination of women, it was the play writers who
boldly came out to champion for equal rights of individuals regardless of their race, gender,
religion, or political affiliation.
