Introduction
A lot of correctional facilities; jails and prisons to be specific, are currently
experiencing a rise in violence and victimization cases. These institutions have thus become
more dangerous than they ought to be. For instance, prisons are taking in more convicts than
they can hold. The convicts then form gangs within the prisons, which compromise the safety
of other inmates and staff.
According to Bowker (1980), most convicts are often antisocial and aggressive;
factors that influence the occurrence of violence and victimization in the prisons. It is the
harsh conditions of these institutions that highly contribute to the high rates of abuse. Many
of the convicts also witness violence and victimization occurrences, but do not report to the
responsible personnel, for the fear of being victims of their fellow inmates as well. The
fatalities realized from negligence and failure to seek medical attention after the attacks also
encourage such actions.
To some extent, guards and staff also encourage violence in prisons by using
excessive force when dealing with violence cases and other issues, in return, resulting in
abuse. However, this mostly happens in prisons where the management has endowed the
