This should be in your own words (no quoting), written in third person, and double spaced. A good introduction gets the reader’s attention and makes them want to read more. It is your only chance to make a good first impression. Your thesis statement should be the last sentence of the introduction and should be highlighted in yellow. A good thesis statement should make a debatable claim, such as I believe that ____________ because __________, _____________, and ______________. Summary In this section, you will write a brief summary of Carr’s article. Discuss the main points, giving the reader a brief overview of the article. Write in third person. This part should be about a paragraph, double spaced. Be sure to name the author and the article title, and do not begin with “this article is about…” Pretend the reader has never read “How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” and has never heard of Nicholas Carr. A good opening for a summary would be something like “In the article “How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” by Nicholas Carr, the author discusses…” Remember, a summary only summarizes; your opinion should NOT be included in this part. Response Now it’s time for your opinion on what Carr had to say! This will be the longest portion of the essay, possibly a page or more. Write this part in first person, stating what Carr has to say (They Say) as well as how you feel about his ideas (I Say). This is the idea behind writing a Summary/Response paper. You will probably want to paraphrase or quote Carr, so this is how to do that using APA Documentation Style. To paraphrase: Carr (2017) believes that smartphones are damaging to our physical and emotional wellbeing. 2 To quote: Nicholas Carr (2017) states that smartphones are “an attention magnet unlike any our minds have had to grapple with before” (p. 602). You may also want to include personal stories about why you agree or disagree with Carr. Remember, this essay is ONLY about Carr’s article, so do not include any outside sources. Conclusion Now that you’ve summarized and responded to Carr’s article, write a conclusion paragraph that effectively recaps your essay, restates the thesis, and brings the essay to a close. Your final draft of this assignment will be 850 words; the rough draft is 650 words. Format your paper exactly like this sample. This is the way an APA paper is formatted. Please read and follow the assignment guidelines and use the rubric for a checklist to make sure you’ve included everything required. One more thing – don’t forget that this essay must have a References list at the end, on its own page. On the following page, I have provided a correctly formatted APA Reference list entry for this assignment. 3 References Carr, N. (2017). How smartphones hijack our minds. In G. Graff, C. Introduction
Nicholas Carr's article titled How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds presents exciting
aspects of the culture of technology and, more so, on smartphones and how they impact human's
in their everyday life. According to his views, humans have become over-dependent on
smartphones. Carr (2017) indicates that humans have made smartphones to be their all-time and
perpetual companions. Statistics collected and documented by Apple Company suggest that an
average phone user uses their phone more than 70 times daily. This over-reliance on phone usage
has made Carr (2017); conclude that they weaken an individual's intellect. Nonetheless, I believe
that the over-dependence on smartphones has been attributed to the unceasing evolution of
smartphones because they continue to offer valuable functions that people use and cannot fathom...
