Would Modern Economies collapse if GPS were switched off?
The GPS system refers to a constellation of up to 32 satellites that orbit around the
earth. GPS is owned by the US defense department, which can be used by anyone around the
world who has a receiver. Initially, GPS was used for locating positions on the earth; lately, it
has gained many other uses like for shipping navigation purposes, improved landing for
commercial aircrafts, keeping track of people and items, giving directions and time
estimation of various natural events occurrences, etc. GPS has, therefore, become part of our
lives and it dramatically impacts the economic sector.
If all GPS satellites were switched off, all modern economies would collapse. This is
because of the kind of dependency that the commercial ventures being carried out have
attached to GPS services. An example is the shipping industry which uses GPS to locate and
avoid a collision during movements. Automatic Identification Systems are used to determine
