Description

Read the Union Carbide Corporation and Bhopal case that begins on page 384 of your Business, Government, and Society textbook.

Consider the concerns as described in this case and prepare a memorandum that addresses the concerns described below. Your memo should be completed in narrative form.

Identify all of the potential ethical issues you see (if any). Describe and analyze the implications of each issue, including who or what were affected by the company’s response. In identifying issues and addressing their implications, your discussion should be as comprehensive as possible—you should consider any economic, social, or ecological implications, as well as the potential impact at least two cultural differences you can identify.

Additionally, your analysis should thoroughly identify and discuss at least two potential courses of action that the company could have taken with respect to each issue you have discussed. Clearly demonstrate your reasoning process—identify and explain any ethical principles or arguments you are relying on; do not simply state unsupported conclusions.

If you choose to apply any approaches to ethical reasoning that you learned about in this course, clearly state what they are and how you are applying them to this case. Of the possible solutions you identified, which would you recommend that the company should have adopted as a resolution? Again, fully explain and justify your recommendations. Finally, explain how you would implement each solution you have recommended.

This assignment will make up a percent of your grade to be determined by your faculty member.

Union Carbide Corporation And Bhopal Case

2

Introduction
This paper is aimed at examining the case of Union Carbide Corporation and
Bhopal, which was a major gas leak incident in India. It is considered as one of the world’s worst
industrial disaster. In the night of 1984, Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in
Bhopal suffered a leak. This leak released methyl isocyanides gas and other chemicals from the
plant, which became the reason of a dangerous chemical catastrophe. Some people died, and
some suffered from serious health problems. It also caused major environmental damage such as
pollution of soil and water. This disaster was caused by the cheap maintenance and faulty safety
system. The company adopted these cheap and inexpensive ways to cut off its expenses. In
addition to the distinguished environmental problems, the case raised some ethical issues as well.
Ethical Issues
Several ethical issues were raised in Bhopal disaster case. First of all the use of methyl
isocyanides (MIC) gas was wrong. To human health, it is very hazardous. Bhopal used that for
the sake of low costs. Along with this, these chemicals were stored by them in larger tanks.
These chemicals, ethically, needs to be kept in steel drums for reducing the exposure risk. They
did not even bother for checking their pipelines. Their pipelines were rusty. Being a gas industry,
they should be keeping their pipelines clean. They did not provide proper training to the staff
because it required more budget. They should have paid more attention to the regulation of
several security systems. Instead of providing an effective system of security for the chemicals,
they preferred to save money. When UCIL’s parent company, UCC transferred its pesticides
plant to Bhopal, they did not provide proper safety mechanisms. Maybe they assumed, UCIL
will take care of themselves. But, India was not much aware of security precautions that time.

They only knew how to save money. Consequently, they moved forward with this absence of
security measures and triggered the disaster that factually killed people (Broughton, 2005).
Certain individuals said that it might be U.S. fault to not provide the complete system of
security. However, once more they were unsure. Therefore, people started saying that the
