Cloning of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
After many years of failed attempts, the cloning of human embryos has been accomplished (Stein and
Doucleff par. 1). The discovery was realized at the Oregon Health and Science University. It was an
essential step in the journey towards uncovering the potential of such cells in the treatment of some of the
most debilitating human diseases (USA Today). The economic implications of the discovery are farreaching as it may further the agenda of finding solutions to some of the most costly health conditions to
manage. Several other studies are currently ongoing to establish whether such cells made without
embryos can have the desired medical implications. Success had been previously realized only in mice
and monkeys (Tachibana et al. 1232). The same method had been utilized in the famous ‘dolly the sheep,’
(Palca n.p.). However, the discovered has come with several ethical considerations as it involves the
destruction of embryos (FDA). Such a factor may be the most critical impediment to the full utilization of
the method in future research. All in all, the discovery has many benefits that overwhelm such moral
concerns as it can save the world from some of the most challenging healthcare issues.
