Counseling Theories
Introduction

Counsellors in education have the role of ensuring that they change the mindsets of
students from the negative to the positive mindsets that enable them to perform better in their
academics and societies. The case of Annabel is no different, as a counselor, one has to choose
counseling theories that will work well with the client’s issues. Also, the counselor has to be
flexible and sensitive to her problems to enable improvement.
Maslow’s humanistic theory
The humanistic approach to counseling emphasizes the inherent motive towards selfactualization. The approach helps clients in their process of realizing and showing their
capacities as well as creativity. The use of the humanistic approach is based on the idea that
people are all naturally good (Stober, 2006). The counselors that use the theories adopt a holistic
method to approach human lives and pay a lot of attention to aspects like free will, the positive
potential of the clients and creativity. Therefore, the clients are encouraged to perceive
themselves as a whole instead of the sum of their parts. Counsellors also encourage their patients
to do self-exploration instead of comparing themselves to other people. The school of thought
also promotes the application of spiritual beliefs as a means of the psyche (Watson & Bohart,
2015).
The humanistic counselors encourage clients to practice self-awareness and mindfulness
that helps them shift their mindsets from their current reactions that may be self-destructive to
mindsets that are healthier and productive. The kind of therapy also helps people become
productive and improve their self-worth (Watson & Bohart, 2015). Therefore, the counselor
takes a passive role and allows the client to express themselves.

The Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs theory is an example of such humanistic approaches.
According to the theory, the different human needs vary in importance, and one has to realize the
lower needs in the hierarchy before moving to the important ones (Watson & Bohart, 2015). The
human needs are usually presented in a pyramid starting from the physiological needs at the base
of the pyramid to the self-actualization at the top. According to the theory, the psychological
needs represent the basic needs for the survival of humans (Schneider, 1999). They include food,
water, and housing. People need them to survive. The next category of needs is called the safety
need. People need to be physically safe before they can desire anything else. People need to be
safe from war and violence. If people are not safe, they may experience trauma. Safety needs
include financial safety, personal safety, health and good health. The next level of needs is the
needs to belong somewhere socially (Watson & Boha...
