My Experience in a Learning Support Classroom
Learning support classroom is one of the most interesting places I ever had an
opportunity to visit. Assisting learners with special needs requires a humanly heart. More so,
it requires a patient and a kind heart. The learners have some other special needs that the
teacher must cater for. This means that the teacher should have the skills to handle these
special needs in addition to the curriculum. Some learners have difficult in expressing
themselves, walking; repeating what they are told among many others. The fact of the matter
is that the classroom teacher should be able to meet the objectives of not just the day’s lesson
but the whole curriculum. The teacher ensures that he/she leaves the learner as an individual
capable of undertaking various own chores. At the end of the course, these learners are able
to contribute to the society. They are able to work in various capacities as well as start their
own families, which is the ultimate goal to be in school. However, we cannot stop supporting
learning to these disadvantaged human beings in the society. We should salute the learning
support teachers for their heartfelt contribution and assistant to these human beings in the
society.
My 42 hours in 5th Grade learning support classroom gave me an opportunity to
observe various activities that take place. This duration is enough to experience all the
difficulties that both the teachers and the learners go through. It also gave me the opportunity
to understand various techniques that one can use to assist children with learning disabilities.
My experience in the fifth Grade classroom enabled me to learn the various techniques that a
teacher can use while teaching learners with learning disabilities. The teacher should use
different techniques to teach depending on the subject and group of learners. Learners will
conceptualize at different speeds and teachers handle these learners differently. When
learners are handled differently, it gives the teacher an opportunity to understand each of
them and give each of them more attention depending on the learner.

Different teaching techniques help students differently. In this classroom, I observed
that depending on the subject and the group of students a teacher is dealing with, a different
technique is adopted. Learners with high incident of disability are given more attention. This
gives them an opportunity to have more contact hours with their teachers hence improving
their retention rate. Some learners had autism. Autism refers to a neurodevelopmental
disorder that is majorly characterized my impaired verbal, social interaction as well as nonverbal communication. More so, this disorder is characterised by repetitive and restricted
behaviour. It is a gradual developing disorder among kids especially before age three. For
example, teaching mathematics to these learners, the teacher had to adopt best techniques.
The teacher made sure the learners could teach each other. Students were given tasks and
discussed them in groups thereby teaching each other as they discuss.
The teacher adopted other techniques. From my observation, the teacher used
repetition. This means that the teacher could read a story and the learners were required to
repeat. Each learner was to repeat after the teacher. A timer was also used as the learners
repeated and questions could be asked. This enabled the learners to easily remember and
understand what they were repeating after the teacher. To motivate the learners the teacher
used a stamp when the student got the right answer. Another technique used to help these
learners understand faster was to read together with the teacher. The teacher had six students
while the assistant had five students. This made learning easy due to appropriate student
teacher ratio. More so, this gave the teacher an opportunity to cater for individual learner’s
interest. Best teaching techniques enable leaners to read fluently as well as speak fluently.
Thus, at the end of the course all objectives were achieved with ease. Best techniques applied
in teaching left the students having achieved what they had to achieve after completion of
school.

Despite teachers using various teaching techniques, learners always had various
learning abilities. My observation was that the learning support learners conceptualized the
content they were being taught differently. Some learners repeated reading after the teacher
with ease. On the other hand, some had difficulties to repeat after the teacher. The learners
that had autism had more difficulties than those without. The learners with high learning
disabilities had more difficulties as well. They could not read together with the teacher. More
so, they could not actively particip...
