The Mayor of a large city was given a free membership in an exclusive golf club by people who have received several city contracts. The gifts ranged from $200 tickets to professional sports events to designer watches and jewelry.

A college instructor is pursuing her doctorate in night school. To gain extra time for her own studies, she gives her students the same lectures, the same assignments, and the same examinations semester after semester without the slightest effort to improve them.

Todd and Edna have been married for three years. They have had serious personal problems. Edna is a heavy drinker, and Todd cannot keep a job. Also, they have bickered and fought constantly since their marriage. Deciding that the way to overcome their problems is to have a child, they stop practicing birth control, and Edna becomes pregnant.

In dealing with any of the ethical dilemmas, the key consideration is the desire to achieve
the best action. In this case, before deciding on the ethical position of mayor, it is important to
consider that under ethics of virtue, to be good one must always do what is considered to be
morally upright. The action should be based on achieving the ultimate good which is happiness.
In this case, the mayor has an opportunity to receive a free membership in an exclusive golf club
which is given by some people who have city contracts. The ethical position in this case should
be decided based on the motive and the consequences of such an action. Further, the case of the
mayor accepting gifts from an organization which is considered to have not done any business
with the city but might do it in some days to come should be judged based on the moral
standards as they apply to the individual behavior as well as the code of conduct which apply to
the organization of the entity.
The first issue to consider in this scenario is whether the conduct of the mayor was by the
political, economic and legal ways in the operations of the city. If the policies of the city
prohibits a sitting mayor from accepting gifts and other benefits from the city business
associates, then the conduct of the mayor is unethical. It is also important to consider the
morality of the actions of the mayor.
