Ethics of religion
Introduction
The ethics of religion and spirituality in psychotherapy is complex, as it involves many
issues that span religious belief and moral philosophy. These include whether it is ethical to
incorporate religious or spiritual practices into therapy, as well as how much control therapists
should have over their clients' religious beliefs and practices. This has prompted higher
education institutions such as the Grand Canyon University (GSU) to incorporate faith-based
education in their curriculum (Grand Canyon University, 2020). This paper describes the ethical
implications of implementing spirituality or religion in therapy regarding competence, multiple
relations, values in therapy, and informed consent as ethical consideration areas, as well as
explains how the Christian worldview can guide ethical decision-making for the four ethical
consideration areas.
Competence
In religious ethics, competence means that the therapist has the skills necessary to
provide therapeutic services in a way that is appropriate and beneficial for patients who choose
to follow an alternative belief system. Psychotherapists should consider whether or not they have
enough knowledge about religions other than their own when working with clients who follow
alternative belief systems. The American psychology association states that psychologists should
only provide services they are trained for and have the professional experience to provide to the
client (American Psychological Association, 2010). Therapists should always consider their
personal values when working with clients with religious beliefs or spiritual practices. This is
because having an open line of communication with your clients is essential for creating trust
between yourself and them.
