Explanation & Answer

Here is your initial post. I chose to write about Jekyll and Hyde and the poem Dover Beach. I will respond to other students when other students post!!Jekyll
and Hyde and Dover Beach When Jekyll states
that “man is not truly one, but truly two,” he is literally
saying that he is two men. Besides this character, this can be
metaphorically true for any person in the world. Everyone has a good
and bad side. When a person is happy, they do nice deeds for others.
When a person is angry, they release a wrath on others. It is
possible for a society to be truly two because there are people with
different beliefs that make pertinent choices for our society. For
example, there are Republicans and Democrats, and there are some of
each that run in each state. The different beliefs of society are
shown through the laws that the society gets based on these two
different parties. Some people agree with the Republicans, and some
people agree with the Democrats, so that is a society divided by two
right there. The implications of being not truly one, but two is
that there will be arguments, people will not agree, fights will
break out, and people may even die over things that they don't agree
with. Matthew Arnold's
Dover Beach is a very
conflicting piece. It uses duality throughout the poem. It starts
out giddy and the audience is introduced to beautiful scenery. The
author and his companion can see France from the other side of Dover
Beach in England. The poem is trying to show how much science has
changed peoples' faith in the time.
To
lie before us like a land of dreams, So
various, so beautiful, so new, Hath
really neither joy, nor love, nor light, Nor
certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain; And
we are here as on a darkling plain
(30-35).
America
was a land of dreams because of God. Science has been starting to
pull away peoples' beliefs of God and that has made the world dark
according to the author. The Dover Bitch parody
of the poem was very entertaining. It explained how the girl in the
poem was probably angry to be brought with the author just for the
author to complain about the world's changes when she can be having a
good time in France.
