Maslow’s theory maintains that people’s motivation is derived from the desire to attain
certain needs. For instance, basic needs such as water and food motivate the behaviors and
activities of the people. Further, safety and esteem needs motivate the people to engage in
actions that enhance their security and feeling of accomplishment (Maslow, 2012). In the same
way, members of a black student club are likely to engage in a predominantly white college to
accomplish certain needs. Their motivation to participate in the college is influenced by the
desire to meet various needs.
Members of a black student club tend to face discriminations. Stereotypes and prejudice
in the society. Most of these people have a low self-esteem due to the constant discriminations
they have to face from the white individuals. As such, in a bid to help build their self-esteem the
black individuals are motivated to find ways in which they can become courageous among the
white people. The motivation of the members of a black student club can be understood by using
Maslow’s needs theory.

black students engaging in a white college is the need for safety. Members of the black student
club face discriminations from the white people, and in turn, the emotional safety is threatened.
Emotional safety is one of Maslow’s needs that are believed to motivate the behaviors and
actions of the people (Lester, 2013). The members of the black student club are likely to
participate in a college that is primarily for the white people for emotional safety purpose.
Also, job security is another motivational factor that can influence the decision of the
black students to attend or participate in a college mainly for the white people. Colleges mainly
for the white people are known to offer best education opportunities. They also increase the
