the weights of adult gopher tortoises are normally distributed with a mean of 12 pounds and a standard deviation of 1.5 pounds. determine what percentage of gopher tortoises weigh less than 10 pounds

May 1st, 2015

We need to find P(x, such that x<(12-10)/1.5=1.333) on the normalized dist. function.

On the graph it's the area under the curve up to this point x (located to the left of the center of the bell curve)

This is done with tables of cumulative distribution function (the total probability up to x) and is found to be

0.40824

so roughly 41% gopher tortoises weigh less than 10 pounds
