Question Description

Write a paper (2,000-2,500 words) in which you apply the concepts of epidemiology and nursing research to a communicable disease. Refer to "Communicable Disease Chain," "Chain of Infection," and the CDC website for assistance completing this assignment.

Communicable Disease Selection

Choose one communicable disease from the following list:

  1. Chickenpox
  2. Tuberculosis
  3. Influenza
  4. Mononucleosis
  5. Hepatitis B
  6. HIV
  7. Ebola
  8. Measles
  9. Polio
  10. Influenza

Epidemiology Paper Requirements

Address the following:

  1. Describe the communicable disease (causes, symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment) and the demographic of interest (mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence). Is this a reportable disease? If so, provide details about reporting time, whom to report to, etc.
  2. Describe the determinants of health and explain how those factors contribute to the development of this disease.
  3. Discuss the epidemiologic triangle as it relates to the communicable disease you have selected. Include the host factors, agent factors (presence or absence), and environmental factors. (The textbook describes each element of the epidemiologic triangle). Are there any special considerations or notifications for the community, schools, or general population?
  4. Explain the role of the community health nurse (case finding, reporting, data collecting, data analysis, and follow-up).
  5. Identify at least one national agency or organization that addresses the communicable disease chosen and describe how the organization(s) contributes to resolving or reducing the impact of disease.
  6. Discuss a global implication of the disease. How is this addressed in other countries or cultures? Is this disease endemic to a particular area? Provide an example.

A minimum of three peer-reviewed or professional references is required.

Epidemiology and Nursing on Communicable Diseases: Tuberculosis
Date of submission

Epidemiology branch in medicine is part of the integral components in the current world
systems that cannot be sidelined in matters regarding health. Nursing goes hand in hand with
epidemiological research in order to ensure diseases such as the communicable diseases are not
spread easily or are managed efficiently by causing any intense danger to human health and
society. Communicable diseases are those illnesses that can be transmitted from one person to
the other through a number of ways including body fluids, breathing in contaminated air or insect
and animal bites. The diseases are highly contagious as the infection is rapidly spread from one
person to another in case of a highly populated area (World Health Organization, 2013). Some of
the diseases can also be spread through touching of contaminated surfaces or items in their
surroundings. Epidemiology hence tries to study some of the ways such infections are spread,
their symptoms, the complications and the treatments to such cases while nursing often involves
the care of individuals who might have contracted the contagious diseases.
This is one of the main contagious diseases killers in the world and is also known as TB.
The infectious disease is responsible for mainly affecting the human lungs. The bacteria can also
attack some other body parts including the brain and the spine. Millions of people around the
world die annually due to the disease and other tens of millions get infected. The disease was
first known to man around the 18th and 19th century before the microbial causative agents were
first discovered. The causes of the infectious disease are through inhalation of contaminated air
when a person who is infected with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium sneezes, spits,
talks, or coughs (Tuberculosis, 2017). The disease is highly contagious but is not relatively easy

for one to be infected from a stranger but rather a family member or friend. The contagious
disease may have different symptoms depending on the part of the body where the bacterium
may have attacked. The common symptoms, however, include a very persistent bad coughing
which may last for three weeks or even longer, chest pains that are excruciating and blood spots
on the cough and sputum. Some other common symptoms of TB include noticeable rapid weight
loss, lack of appetite, frequent chills, and fatigue with heavy sweating at night (Tuberculosis,
2017). The disease is responsible for causing very many complications in the body. Some of the
medical complications caused include spinal pain, some swelling on the brain, some liver or
kidney complications, and some heart disorders. The treatment for TB includes giving out the
Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine to infants and small children. The disease can also be
diagnosed by issuing blood tests,...
