The Freedmen’s bureau was established through the Congress Act in 1865 with the
sole aim of protecting the freed slaves and guiding them towards attaining political freedom
and achieving economic stability (Behrend, 2014). The bureau acted as the federal welfare
agency that was meant to promote equality among the African Americans through provision
of basic needs such as food and other social amenities. The Freedmen’s bureau amidst its
successes it was marred with lots of criticism and battles that crippled its operation.
