It is not quite true to say that indigenous people are not chosen as
ambassadors or that people do not listen to them. Six indigenous people
have been chosen by Canada, for instance. (Also, one thinks of Malala
representing her village). But it is true to say that very few
indigenous people are articulate, photogenic or media savvy to be able
to make an impact , force people to listen to them – and do something
about the people they represent. Hence ambassadors like Angelina Jolie,
who are truly passionate and care about the indigenous people they
represent, can and do make a big impact. They attract media attention
and can highlight the problems in a way that would otherwise be
difficult or impossible. Hence such ambassadors are necessary.
