The diameter of the Earth at the equator is about 8000 miles. For these questions , assume that it is exactly 8000 miles.

Calculate the circumference of the Earth a the equator sing the value of TT proposed by each of the following people. Round your answers to the nearest tenth of a mile

Diameter of the Earth -8000 miles

Circumference =Pi D

can u provide pi values provided by different  mathematician?

I am using 22/7 for example

Circumference =22/7 x 8000

=25142.857

=25142.86 miles.

a. The Rhind Papyrus  4(8/9)^2

b.   Ptolemy 377/120

c.  Zu Chongzhi 355/113

d.  Aryabhata 62832/20000

62832/20000

a) The Rhind of Papyrus

C=4(8/9)^2 *8000

=25283.94

b)Ptolemy

C= 377/120 *8000

=25133.34

C) Zu Chonzhi

C= 355/113 *8000

=25132.74

D)Aryabhata

C=62832/20000 *8000

=24931.28

The best estimate is given by Aryabhatas value of pi.

Tried your formula and this is what i got:

Ptolemy

377/120 x 8000

= 251333.333

= 251333. 33 miles

Zu Chongzhi

355/113 x 8000

= 26690.265

= 26690.266 miles

Aryabhata

62832/20000 x 8000

= 25132.8

= 25133 miles or 25132.8 miles

****This one not sure how to calculate****

The Rhind Papyrus- 4(8/9)^2

4 ( 8/9 ) x 2 x 8000 ???

Thank you. My answers were off but i get the idea of the formula,

May 2nd, 2015

4(8/9)^2

take square of 8 and 9

4*(64/81)

=3.1604
