Under what circumstances is a search legal, and what usually happens
to evidence that is obtained illegally? Does this process protect
citizens from police abuse, or does it protect criminals from justice?

When one is suspected as a criminals that endangers the life of other human beings. If evidence is obtained illegally it can be discarded to set the person free. Yes, it protects citizens from abuse by police since some can judge them guilty even without evidence. Even criminals must be justified before trials.
