Summary
CCTV, or closed circuit television, a common method of common surveillance has been in
widespread use since the 1970s. It is not uncommon to visit an establishment and notice
surveillance cameras in specific locations. For years, these have been used to track the coming and
going of those who frequent the businesses. As a security measure, it allows law enforcement to
have visual of any illicit activity that might take place in a specific location. The footage recovered
has been used to resolve crimes that have occurred in some locations. It can also serve to deter the
possibility of crime, as the possibility of getting caught rises with the existence of the cameras.
Their use in personal homes, however, is not as widely used. Because households are not
perceived to be nearly as prone to crime as businesses. For one, there is bound to be less people
traveling through the location, as they tend to be much more private. However, including CCTV
footage in homes could help increase the overall security of those housed in them. In this report, a
brief overview of CCTV will be presented, so as to make a case for their usage at home. Likewise,
the ethical concerns that surround these CCTV, which are only augmented when it comes to private
locations, are presented to provide some nuance to the consideration.

Introduction
A security camera is commonly known by their title, Closed-Circuit Television
(CCTV). In some cases, they are also called video, surveillance. This technology involves the use
of video cameras and cameras to transmit signals to a given place through a limited set of monitors.
This technique, however, differs from broadcasting in the sense that the signs are not openly
transmitted and can only be viewed by the individual in the control room to whom the visual
images are transferred. This transmission can also provide a point to point connection or an end to
multipoint wireless links. Even though the definition used for the CCT can be applied to all the

other cameras, this description is most universally used for surveillance purposes at homes, banks,
and other areas where security is needed. The availability of this technology and its ability to help
in reducing crimes has made it very popular in the developed countries. In countries like the U.S.A.
and the U.K., the surveillance cameras are used not just in business premises but also at homes. In
this technological report, two fundamental factors are going to be addressed. These are:

The history and use of surveillance Camera in the U.S.

The ethical issues surrounding the use of cameras at homes.

History of camera security (CCTV)
The first CCTV systems were out to use by Siemens AG in Peenemunde, Germany at the
Test Standard VII. This item was first used in the Nazi Germany in 1940s, and its main application
was to observe the launching of the V-2 rockets. The engineer that is attributed to the design and
installation of the first CCTV was a German called Walter Bruch. In the United States, the first
CCTV to be used commercially was called Verizon, and it was made available in 1949. Expert
historians have indicated that there is very little knowledge about this first CCTV.
When the first security cameras were used, there was a need to have a team of people who regularly
monitored the Camera because these earlier CCTV did not have a recording system that would
record information for later verification (Kumar & Svensson, 2015). Later, technological experts
involved developed what was called the reel-to-reel media that made it possible to record the
surveillance footage. Still, as the recording system grew, there was a challenge since the magnetic
tapes needed to be changed manually as often as possible to continue with the recording. Though
it was a cumbersome method, it was beneficial at the time. The other challenge with this system
of magnetic tapes was that the changing from one tape to another was time-consuming, it was also
expensive and less reliable. There had to be an operator who manually threaded the tape from the

tape reel to the recorder and then onto a blank take-up-reel. These limitations and complications
when using the surveillance along with the need to employ a person that would monitor the
monitoring as well as change the tapes made them less famous. In the 1970s, VCR technology was
developed and this significantly transformed the surveillance system. The system made it possible
for smoother recording and ease in the erasure of information captured by the camera. At this point,
CCTV began to become very popular.
Improvement in technology led to the development of the digital multiplexing in
the 1990s and the new technology made it possible to increase security using the CCTV. This
technique allowed the use of several cameras that were able to record all at once. It also allowed
for time lapse as well as motion-only technology. The scientific success of digital multiplexing
increased time and money saved and the result was increased use of CCTV. This is when people
began to use these gadgets at their homes and...
