Write a rhetorical analysis of 1000 words on one academic research article from your Annotated

Chapters 8, “Using Critical Thinking to Analyze Essays” and Chapter 9, “Writing Argumentative
Essays” useful for guiding you through the assignment.
A rhetorical analysis is an essay that describes and evaluates the effectiveness of an author’s
argumentation strategies. You must first understand the content of your source text
thoroughly, and then go on to the rhetorical analysis. The content is dealt with only very briefly
in your introductory paragraph with two or three sentences. The vast majority of the essay deals
with the rhetoric itself.
Structure your essay using an appropriate thesis statement and academic paragraph format. Use
academic English in your writing. Again, the thesis statement will be your position or argument
about the effectiveness of the author’s argumentation. The body paragraphs will provide details
and examples from the text you are working with to support your position about the
argumentation.
Your rhetorical analysis will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
Content: clear, complete and comprehensive with appropriate focus on the argumentation
Structure: thesis statement, paragraph structure using topic sentences, transitions and
concluding sentences; strong introduction and conclusion
Diction: professional tone, no slang or contractions, no use of 1st person
Grammar, mechanics, spelling and other writing matters correct
Format: double-spaced, paragraphs indented, format according to MLA guidelines

1. Learn to integrate other people’s ideas into your own.
2. Learn to format your work correctly using MLA guidelines for print and electronic
sources in your in-text citations and Works Cited page.
Assignment Guidelines
You are expected to use and integrate into your essay the sources you used for your Annotated
Bibliography. Should you want to change them, you may do so, but you must keep with the
research requirements of 3 peer-reviewed articles, one website and one social media posting.
These sources of information need to be of sufficient substance and quality to be included in an
academic paper. The quality of your sources will be taken into account when your grade for the
essay is assigned. Your research essay needs to contain a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10
sources.
The MacEwan library offers workshops on using components of Wikipedia appropriately.
For this assignment, Wikipedia is not considered an acceptable source.
“[R]esearch papers are basically extended versions of [other rhetorical modes]. The
special skills you need are those of finding research material and integrating it with
your own ideas.” (Stewart, et al., Essay Writing for Canadian Students, 5th ed., 162;
emphasis added)
All material summarized, paraphrased or quoted must be documented within your essay
and in the Works Cited page to avoid the charge of plagiarism. Your research essay
needs to be approximately 50% research and 50% your own views and commentary on
the research. Remember that you are writing an essay and NOT a report.
Your research essay will be assigned a zero if work is submitted with no research and/or
no Works Cited page.

Annotated Bibliography
TOPIC: Alberta’s Boreal Forests
The greatest threat to Canada's Boreal forests has been found to be industrial
development and its effects, such as climate change. Although much of the forest is still intact,
industrial activities like logging, mining, and oil and gas development continue to contribute to
the destruction and endangerment of our remaining wilderness areas and the native species. The
following sources display wide research and concreate evidence that shows how corporations
and agriculture are slowly but surely causing our boreal forests to fall towards endangerment.
They also display different approaches on how to prevent further destruction. This topic is
important to highlight the reasons why Canada’s boreal forest is central to the countries natural
environment and economy. The more we understand its importance the more we can stop to
prevent its destruction.
1) Lidén, Marlene et al. "Artificial dispersal of endangered epiphytic lichens: a tool for
conservation in boreal forest landscapes". Biological Conservation 118.4 (2004): 431442. Online. Internet. 23. Oct. 2017.
Marlene Liden, a biologist, and her crew goes into depth to explain and prove how
the boreal forest, has become a presence of an endangered space that has morphed into a
symbol of hazardous danger in Alberta. The article explains the fragmentation of boreal
2
forests across Alberta, and how agriculture has begun to cause the migration and
endangerment of epiphytic lichens and other native species to the land. It goes into depth
to describe theories on how to prevent the extinction of lichens through transplantation.
The article leads as an example on the rapid decrease of species in boreal forests.
2) Scrafford, Matthew, et al. “Wolverine habitat selection in response to anthropogenic
disturbance in the western Canadian boreal forest.” Forest Ecology and Management,
volume 395, July 1. 2017, 27 pages. Agricola,
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378112717300257?via%3Dihub.
Matthew Scrafford and other professors at the University of Alberta, concluded an
article to show how developments are reshaping the distribution of predators, which is
raising the risks and foraging opportunities for wildlife. The article shows evidence and
strategy on why it is imperative to view how animals perceive changes so that boreal
landscapes can be managed to conserve wildlife populations.
3) Cameron, Erin K., et al. “Modelling interacting effects of invasive earthworms and wildfire
on forest floor carbon storage in the boreal forest.” Soil Biology and Biochemistry, Volume
88, September 2015, Pages 189-196. Agricola, DOI: 00380717.
This article examines the biochemistry of how earthworms have become invasive
in the forest ecosystems. Charts and calculations displayed show how earthworms and
wildfires cause carbon in the forest floor to be transferred to the atmosphere and
contribute to the increase of greenhouse gases. Non-native earthworms have invaded the
soil of boreal forest, mainly due to anthropogenic activities. This source depicts an
3
understanding of the topic and is a prime example on how boreal forests in Alberta are
contributing to greenhouse gases. It shows how the impact of agriculture has caused
migration, which is leading to an increase in carbon emission to the environment.
4) Kohler, Monk. “Monitoring Rare Animals in Alberta's Boreal Forest.” ABMI, (2014),
http://ftp.public.abmi.ca//home/publications/documents/36_Monk_etal_2014_Monitoring
RareAnimalsinAlberta'sBorealForest_ABMI.pdf
This site introduces The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI)’s
program, it is designed to track changes in plants and animals across Alberta to help
understand how populations might be changing over time, and who is contributing to the
loss of land by providing hard evidence. If these habitat changes are due to human
interference and climate change. This study shows the introductory and studies into rare
and elusive species of the boreal forests and other regions around Canada. It’s credible,
and also informative about our human footprint on the economy.
5) Wells, Jeff. "The Future of Forests." Boreal Songbird Initiative, 2016, blog,
https://www.borealbirds.org/blog/future-forests.
Here Dr. Wells, one of the world’s top ecologist explains how the boreal is one of
the critical bird habitats within our ecosystem; Billions of birds reside within the boreal
forest. He explains how agriculture is causing havoc on the habitat of the boreal songbird,
which once was able to sustain billions of migratory birds. There are facts and credible
sources that show the steps this organizations is approaching to ensure the safety and
conservation of the songbird and other native animals.
