Officers use a number of force application; Some officers attempt to apprehend a suspect, they may be forced to use less-lethal weapons. These are called less-lethal because their purpose is to subdue without killing the victim. Unfortunately, sometimes even the use of these less-lethal weapons causes the death of a suspect. One example of these types of weapons is the police baton. The baton can be used to strike the resisting suspect, allowing officers to handcuff him. Another less-lethal weapon is the taser. When discharged this weapon sends an electric charge, rendering the suspect incapacitated, giving officers the chance to make the arrest. All of these less-lethal weapons are meant to give officers alternatives to drawing their guns and using deadly force.

Verbal Communication. This is what most of forces lack!

Used in combination with a visible presence, the use of the voice can usually achieve the desired results. Words can be whispered, used normally, or shouted to be effective. The content of the message is as important as your demeanor. It’s always best to start out calm but firm and non-threatening. Choice of words and intensity can be increased as necessary or used in short commands in serious situations. The right combination of words in combination with officer presence can de-escalate a tense situation and prevent the need for a physical altercation. Training and experience improves the ability of a security officer to communicate effectively with everyone including the police.
