Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infection (UTI) also known as bladder infection is an infection that is in any
part of the urinary system which includes the kidneys, urethra, uterus or bladder. Currently,
Urinary Tract Infections are one of the most common type of infection in the health care
facilities. Urinary tract infection that is associated with indwelling urinary catheter is one of the
most usual infections that is contracted by patients in various hospitals (approximately 70-80%).
The infections affect majority of people with varied ages. A urinary catheter is a partially flexible
tube which is inserted into the bladder through the urethra to collect urine. Approximate 15-25%
of patients that are hospitalized receive urinary catheters during their being in the facility or
hospital. The major determinant of development of a catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI) duration
of catheterization (Gesmundo, 2016). The more the duration by which catheterization is used the
more the risk of contracting the infection. Therefore, there is the importance that the catheters are
not used for a prolonged time to avoid the infection. In so doing, the rate of infections will go
down and this will foster improved health.
