Introduction
The film, “Glory” features the Union Army’s first military units in the course of the
American Civil War, with exclusively African American soldiers. The men are seen to work
wholeheartedly for their country despite the huge challenges they had to go through as a result of
racism. Their commanding officer Colonel Robert Gould Show, having had experience in war
and experiencing what defeat feels like put the men through the best training possible and
encouraged them to become well prepared for the war. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer
Infantry fought with one spirit for America and were willing to sacrifice even their lives for a
country that had treated them like children of a lesser God, something most depicted in their
heroic actions at Fort Warner.
African Americans had spent all their lives as slaves until a time when they had a chance
to volunteer to become soldiers in the cause of the American Civil War. It appears that the
African Americans had much to offer to America than just receiving commands and executing
firm duties as slaves. These men were gifted and hardworking. They had the quest to learn and
offer service for the nation. All they needed was just the opportunity and good training. Their

commanding officer, Colonel Robert Shaw was also different from most white officers: he saw
potential in the African Americans and offered them the best he could. He trusted, listened, and
supported them to become the best soldiers ever. Both the commanding officer and the African
American privates made a spirited team that would lead the rest of the Union Army into the war
at Fort Wagon in which every other regiment hesitated to take the lead.
The enthusiasm and willingness to serve the nation among the African American
volunteers are seen right from the beginning as they volunteer in great numbers and the lack of a
