GENERAL EDUCATION VS STEM EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION AND THESIS
STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics
introduced by the National Science Foundation in the 1990s (Sanders, 2009). STEM education is
an educational program that employs the integrative symbiotic relationship between the four
distinct fields that enhances creativity, critical thinking, optimism, ethics and collaboration
among students (Basham & Marino, 2013). On the other hand, general education involves
learning some subjects such as mathematics, social studies, physical development, fine arts, and
reading in primary and secondary level schools. Currently, the United States does not prepare a
sufficient number students and teachers alike in the STEM area, and students in the secondary
school are increasingly failing in Mathematics and Science (Kuenzi, 2008). Due to that, it is
important to carry out further research on the integration of a STEM-based education in the
curriculum, to find out how to provide qualified teachers and to improve the proficiency of
students in the area. STEM education relies on special programs and special funding from
government initiatives as opposed to general education that derives its funds from previously
allocated government revenue and STEM education should be fully incorporated into the
conventional curriculum.
