WRITING PROJECT GUIDELINES - MATH 4306 You are to read and write a review of one of the following articles – all are available through the JSTOR database which may be accessed online through the UHD Library web services. 1. Coding Theory: A Counterexample to G.H. Hardy’s Conception of Applied Mathematics, The American Mathematical Monthly 77 (1970): 249-258. 2. Factor Groups, The Mathematical Gazette, 62 (1978): 29-35. 3. Genesis of the Abstract Ring Concept, The American Mathematical Monthly 103 (1996): 417-424. 4. Groups, Factoring, and Cryptography, Mathematics Magazine, 69 (1996): 103-109. 5. Groups in Modular Arithmetic, The Mathematical Gazette 62 (1978): 94-104. 6. A History of Lagrange’s Theorem on Groups, Mathematics Magazine 74 (2001): 99-108. 7. Rings, Subrings, Identities and Homomorphisms, The Two-Year College Mathematics Journal 5 (1974): 25-28. 8. Some First Tantalizing Steps into Semigroup Theory, Mathematics Magazine 80 (2007): 331-344. 9. What is Special About the Divisors of 12?, Mathematics Magazine, 86 (2013): 143-146. PROJECT GUIDELINES 1. Your review should be written as an essay using standard English with an introduction, development of your topic and a conclusion. 2. In your review, you should include:  The name of the article and the author(s).  The purpose of the article.  The level of mathematics background that you think a reader should have in order to be able to understand the article.  Detailed comments on the math content of the article.  What did you learn by reading the article: Did you learn any new mathematics? Deepen your understanding of mathematics that you have studied before? Gain a better appreciation for the types of ideas that lead to mathematical papers? Etc. 3. You should have a cover page with your name and the name of the paper you reviewed (give a complete citation). The review itself should be of length 2-3 typed pages using the word processor of your choice with a spell checker! You should use Times New Roman 12 point font, double spacing and have one-inch margins. 4. Determination of grade of your review. First, your review will be graded for completeness and purpose: Did you address each of the points stated in part 2? How well did you address each point? Second, your review will be graded for how well it is written. Your completeness and purpose grade will be lowered by one letter grade if your paper is poorly written and is not written using correct grammar. The UHD Writing Center (N925) helps students become better editors of their own work. Due Date: You must turn in to me a print copy of your paper by 5 PM on Monday, December 4. Papers received after this time will be penalized for late submission. This project counts 5% of your course grade.

Article: A History of Lagrange’s Theorem on Groups
Author: Richard L. Roth
The Purpose of this article is to give an appropriate explanation of the historical setting of
Lagrange’s approach and follow the respective flow of thought into the twentieth century.
In essence, the outcome known as Lagrange's Theorem, in a group theory, states that for a finite
group B the order of any subgroup divides the order of B. Therefore, the author explains the
historical setting of Lagrange's approach, and follows this train of thought into the twentieth
century.
