The area of the Earth’s surface is approximately 516 X 106 km2.  What is the weight of the entire atmosphere in tonnes?  Express your answer using scientific notation, in units of 1012 tonnes.

You could use the average atmospheric pressure of 0.0066678 tonnes/square inch at the earth's surface to estimate the atmosphere's total weight.

516 X 10^6 km^2 = 8.4779 x 10^13 in^2

8.4779 x 10^13 in^2 x 0.0066678 = 0.05653 x 10^13 tonnes

= 0.5653 x 10^12 tonnes.
