This is a classmate's response to the above discussion question:
"The U.S. census is a method of data collection which can then be analyzed with statistical knowledge similar to what we’ve done in the last few weeks. The U.S. Census Bureau counts every member of every household thus resulting in the total population. T-tests can be used to make inferences about the population based on samples. ANOVA tests can be conducted to test multiple parameters, providing information about American demographics which the government uses for budget reallocation. The limitations with hypothesis testing for this type of analysis is you’re not getting the whole picture and the sample size matters. For example, if the total population is 350 million people, you would need a massive sample size to make an accurate inference about the population. It might be helpful to break down the data to men and women, or by age group, but you would still need a significant sample size to garner accurate results. Another limitation is the census only publishes statistics for cities and towns with a population of at least 5,000 people. Though this may not impact results, it should still be noted as a limitation of the analysis. The other limitation I see with census data is accuracy because you are expecting everyone to be 100% honest in the surveys which is just not realistic. I’m not sure the census bureau can verify every survey to ensure everyone was stating factual data."
