Find the coordinates of the vertices and foci and the equations of the asymptotes for the hyperbola, x^2/169 - y^2/144=1

May 6th, 2015

x^2/a^2-y^2/b^2=1

x^2/169 - y^2/144=1

x^2/13^2 - y^2/12^2=1

The center is (h,k)=(0,0)

Vertex : (h-a,k) and (h+a,k)

(-13,0) and (13,0)

Foci : (h-c, k) and (h+c, k)

c^2=a^2+b^2

c^2=13^2+14^2=169+144=313

c=sqrt 313

so foci (-sqrt 313, 0) and (sqrt 313, 0)

asymptotes:

y = ± (b/a)x

y = ± (12/13)x
