Schedules of reinforcement
The form of addiction I have chosen in this case is drug addiction. Drug addiction is a
substance use disorder and is considered a form of disease that affects the behavior as well as the
brain of an individual. It therefore makes the individual to be unable to control the use of the
drug even if it is legal or illegal. Person can continue using the drugs continuously despite the
harmful effects associated with the drug. Some of the addictive drugs are marijuana, alcohol,
nicotine and heroine. In most cases, drug addiction starts by experimenting them in social
gatherings and with time, the use of the drug becomes a routine. To other people, they may be
addicted to drugs due to long exposure to prescribed medication. The rate of addiction to the
drugs is different as some cause more addiction than others.
Drug addiction is an operant conditioning. It is as a result of the cause and effect
relationships which exist between behavior and the consequences of that behavior ( DiLorenzo,
T. M. (1988). It is a form of conditioning that is associated with the element of common sense.
When a particular behavior is rewarded, it increases and when it is punished, the behavior
declines. Here, a substance will only become addictive if it is enjoyable or pleasurable. In this
case, people become addicted to drugs when they take them for pleasure.
The seeking and cravings for drugs is as a result of effects of addiction on the reward
system of the brain. Addictive substances usually replace the other reward sources that are
