Humanitarian hero

1. How much was Mortenson’s failure the result of poor character and how much
was the product of the factors?
I would have to say it is a 50/50 spilt because he told the truth in his book and did not lie.
He would have been brought up as a big celebrity but the other factor did not help as they
put him on the news so he thought well I have to do better for myself and so he did by
lying.

2. Which poses the greater danger to a leader’s character success or failure? I would
have to say success and here is why.
If you fail as a leader there is something to learn from that and shows you are human, but
if you keep having success than you have to keep out doing yourself and do better every
time and one of those times you might have to do something that is wrong to succeed.

3. Why do we often have difficulty acknowledging that our heroes have flaws?

Surname2

The reason we have difficulty is because we want or heroes to be better than us and be a
good role models. Just like in the bible people often say you should be more like people
in the bible I but in most cases most of the people in the bible had big flaws but yet we
hold them to be heroes.

4. Is Mortenson now complete discredited as a spokesperson for building schools in
central Asia?
I would have to say that he is mostly because as they said in the article only about 1/3 of
the schools he built where working and the rest were not even under construction or were
used as storage.
5. As a donor what ethical responsibility do you have when deciding which charities
to support?
I think as a donor your responsibilities are you have to check and see what the company
is doing with your money. Before I donate money I want to know what they plan on
doing with the money and then follow up to make sure they do it.
6. Has Mortenson done more good than harm?
I would have to say that he has done more good than harm and this is why; he has
brought attention to the Asia area in which they need more schools and has shown that he
is human and asked for forgiveness for what he has done.

4. Rate your ethical development based on your past experience and education. Where
would you place yourself on the continuum between novice and expert? What in your
background contribute to your ratings?
One of my first jobs that I have ever had was working as a telemarketer. I had just started
making really good money for what I thought to be a pretty easy job. I was very eager to be in
the workforce and make money. I can look back and say that I have grown a lot from where I
am in life now. I have committed mutual deceit by exaggeration. I was exaggerating the
benefits of what the customer would receive and had to use such words carefully over the phone
to help promote sales. The managers wrote scripts for us to say verbatim, and we said it as it was
written on the paper. Ambiguity was used in the words that we used to persuade consumers to
purchase our services. We mainly used words like "virtually free" or our internet is "virtually 10
times faster". Although I was not doing so intentionally, I later learned that we were smudging
the truth to make sales even better than they were previously. I do recall moments that we used
No right to hear the truth while making sales. As Hill states, " "since you asked..."(P. 143). This
implies that we left out information that wasn't completely true or clarified to the customer until
they asked. For examples, I recall...
