The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
(SARS-CoV-2) is the most recent and ongoing global crisis. Since its onset in 2019, the
pandemic has caused large-scale morbidity, mortality, and severe human suffering. An
unprecedented global public health crisis has made governments and public health officials
rethink overall disaster risk management strategies (Nandi, 2022). The nature and magnitude of
the COVID- 19 is unprecedented; to date, it has infected more than 600 million and contributed
to more than 6 million deaths globally. Beyond the health implications, the pandemic also
triggered the most severe financial crisis in world history, affecting all countries globally. Due to
its devasting consequences, governments at all levels reacted quickly and implemented several
measures to contain the spread and transmission of the virus.
As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc worldwide, understanding what behaviors
contribute to the spread of the virus has been crucial for implementing containment measures.
Since the pandemic is spread through human-to-human transmission, the most effective
preventive measures pushed by governments and public health officials were behavioral, such as
observing personal hygiene, wearing masks, self-isolation/quarantine, social distancing, and
